Da Hong Pao ("Great Red Robe") is the most famous of the Wuyi rock teas (yan cha), grown in the dramatic river-gorge cliffs of Fujian's Wuyi Mountains. The legendary mother trees on Jiulongke produce almost nothing, so everyday Da Hong Pao is a masterful blend — here built from core-region Rou Gui and Shui Xian and finished with traditional charcoal roasting. The result is the signature yan cha balance the Chinese call "rock bone, floral fragrance": a mineral backbone wrapped in warm roasted and floral notes with a very long aftertaste.
Use about 8g in a small clay teapot with 100°C water; rinse, then steep in quick 10–15 second rounds, lengthening as needed. The roast smooths further with a few months of resting.
The definitive after-dinner oolong for anyone who loves a tea with backbone.
